Mother and Daughter Success Story

Stephanie and Samantha are the first Mother and Daughter success story for JCBC Fitness. They joined JCBC Fitness for two very different reasons. Stephanie and Samantha were already in very active; Stephanie was training for her first Marathon and Samantha was involved with soccer, volleyball and other school activities.  Samantha was looking forward to improving her fitness and getting faster while Stephanie’s intention was to spend time with her daughter.

They had tried a Boot Camp in Atlanta and really enjoyed the format. Samantha decided she wanted to find something around Olathe that they could do together over the summer.  Stephanie was more than willing to find something but she was a little skeptical of seeing benefits in a boot camp style workout.  She soon learned how beneficial the class was to her as she shared, “I quickly learned that there were muscles that I hadn’t worked out in a while.” While Samantha really enjoyed the instruction in class and “…thought Jen was great!”

After their first month of workouts “I noticed myself improving by getting stronger and faster,” said Samantha.  Stephanie shared that “After the first week, I found I really enjoyed the group atmosphere, and the constantly changing workout.  I had found myself in a rut with my workout and joining boot camp really helped me break out of that rut.  After a month, I found there were things I hadn't been doing enough of.   Abs is a good example, I like that the class is good mix of all areas.    And every workout is different, so it is constantly challenging my body in new ways.”

There were several benefits to participating with JCBC Fitness that neither one of them expected to happen. Samantha was surprised that she learned “how important it was to eat veggies.  I also decided to try a triathlon, as well as cross country at school.” Stephanie is enjoying “the start of a six pack since I have been working out at boot camp!  I like the way my muscles look.  I feel like I have gotten leaner, while staying strong.  That was important to me while I have been training for my first marathon.  Since the camp is go at your own pace, it makes it easy to scale to how I feel that day, depending on my training run.  It also helps me balance out my running with cross training to keep my muscles strong and injury free.”

Stephanie, being a single mom, found it hard to pencil in the time that she needed to take care of herself. She shared what has worked for her. “We often put everyone else ahead of ourselves.  I really struggle with making time to work out without it impacting my family, especially as a single mom.  The most important thing I have learned is how important it is to take care of me, or I can't take care of anyone else.  I have found that if I don't work out everything starts hurting and then I get cranky.  My son has even told me to go workout when he sees I’m a little cranky. Just allowing myself a few minutes to be all about me is all I need sometimes.  I find it best if I schedule my workouts, too.  I block off time on my calendar, and put the workout into the appointment so I always know what I am supposed to be doing.”

Neither of these ladies knew what to expect when they registered with JCBC Fitness with Stephanie being a little leery, and Samantha ready for the challenge! They have both taken home results, much more than they expected. Stephanie shared, “I have always struggled with body image, even though I have never struggled with my weight.  I started working out to deal with my body image issues, but learned along the way that I loved the way it made me feel.  I love reaching a new goal, or doing something I thought I could never do.  Including 2 half marathons, the warrior dash, and soon, a marathon!” Sam is excited to have reached her own goals, “I wanted to become skinnier.  I think boot camp has helped me get skinnier and in better shape.” On top of that she has the metal to prove her first triathlon and is already thinking what the next step is for her new adventure!
